Meals for mutts review
Meals for Mutts are hypoallergenic and gluten-free, making them a great choice for allergy-prone dogs. This has been proven to be true over time. I know of dogs who have had their allergies resolved or have itchy skin after eating cereal/cereal by-product dog food.
The Meals for Mutts website claims that the food is high in nutrients, protein, hypoallergenic and highly digestible. They also claim it contains a mix of probiotics to help support the immune system. Although these terms are not precise, they appear to be fairly accurate. The only exception is “high protein”. Kangaroo & Lamb’s dry food formula has 21% protein. This is quite low compared to other dry foods. It is actually on the lower side when compared to many dry dog foods in this price range.
What does the label say?
Kangaroo, and lamb meat are the first ingredients. However, it is likely that the first three ingredient make up the majority of the recipe. Given alfalfa being the fourth ingredient, we can assume that meat and seasonal vegetable are the “first” ingredients.
Seasonal vegetable can be read in many different ways. It means that the manufacturer can use whatever is available at the moment (or likely what can be sourced inexpensively), but consumers don’t know what the ingredient is. Are they using potato skins or peas? We can only trust that the manufacturer uses ingredients that are safe and healthy for our pets. You might contact Meals for Mutts to ask them.
Brown rice can be one of the best grain additions. Although it is not as good as oats and barley, it is still better than wheat, ambiguous grains, or white rice. Dogs can benefit from good grains if they eat them in moderation. This is why you should tick the box for using decent grains.
All ingredients are carefully considered and give the food a balanced taste. Some nice additions include kelp and garlic. It’s also nice to see natural preservatives used – this is a sign that the product is good.
