How to potty train a puppy or dog in an apartment

Nothing can compare to the joy and excitement of a new puppy! Potty Training is a real pain. Where are all my millennial friends if you are potty training a dog or puppy in an apartment?

Fear not; pet parents new to the world! This guide will show you how to potty-train a puppy.

Create a Daily Routine

Experts claim that a puppy can hold its bladder for an hour every month they are old. Taking them out every 2 hours is safe, as it helps establish a healthy routine. Take them out after they have eaten or drunk, as well as during and after playing.

Choose A Spot

It is important to become familiar with your dog. Every time your dog needs to relieve itself, bring them to the same place on a leash. They’re quick learners, and soon they will be leading you!

Use Positive Reinforcement Dog Training

Many dogs are treat-motivated. You can reward them with playtime, a stroll, or a treat each time they eliminate outside.

Keep to a feeding schedule

If you schedule their feeding, you can train your dog to go to the toilet regularly. Feed them at the same time every day to make house training easier.

Take Out The Water Dish Before Going To Bed

If a dog drinks before bed, they are more likely to need the bathroom at night. Removing their water bowl a few hours before bedtime is a good idea. Most puppies can sleep for about seven hours without having to go potty!

Use Puppy Patches or Pee Pads

Apartment dwellers will find this trick especially useful. Place a pee pad in a consistent location – ideally near the front door – so that your dog can use it if they start to relieve themselves inside. A puppy patch can be used on a terrace or porch to mimic grass and to keep your pup on schedule if it is difficult for them to go outside.

Look Out For Signs

You can tell if you pay attention to the signs of a puppy that needs to be taken outside. Act accordingly when you see these signs:

Circling

Sniffing/licking the groin area

Sniffing in the house

Antsy behavior

Whining

Pawing at the Door

Communication between you and your dog is important as both are getting to know one another.

You and your dog will be potty-trained in no time if you pay attention to your furry friend, follow a schedule, and reward them for good behavior by giving them an I love you a cookie.
