Get birds for your garden this winter
It’s not only us humans who need to stay warm as the nights get colder and shorter, but also the wildlife that is compelled to come to our gardens in the winter. The amount of wildlife that visits our gardens in summer slowly decreases throughout the autumn and winter. Only a few hardy species remain. Many native species remain and attempt to survive the cold winters while others move on to warmer climates.
However, that doesn’t mean they don’t require our support. The RSPB and 25 other wildlife organizations recently conducted a study that found that 60% of UK bird species have suffered a decline in recent years. This is largely due to a decrease in habitat. The loss of habitat has meant that birds have less food, particularly in winter when insects and bugs are scarce. This is where we can help. By providing a regular, small food source for wildlife in our area, we can make a significant impact on the future of many species in the UK.
We can help you provide for the local bird population no matter what size your outdoor space may be.
Plants- A great way to feed the birds and both you as well as local wildlife, plants can be a simple way to provide food for them, especially if they are berry-laden. One larger bush can provide food for many birds, making it a great winter source.
Insect-Friendly Zones – Insects are scarce during winter, so any way you can encourage them will be appreciated. You can encourage them by creating log piles in one corner of the garden or putting long grass around their area.
Nest boxes – Although most birds can find their home in the winter, others will prefer a warm and sheltered home. A nest box can be used as a home for one pair of mating birds, and you will get to see their young in the warmer months.
Bird tables – Designed for larger gardens, a table is a great bird feeding area that you can also enjoy. It’s a beautiful sight to look out your window and see a variety of birds feeding. You can feel secure knowing that you are doing your part.
Bird Feeders If you have limited outdoor space, feeders will work well. You’ll enjoy seeing small birds hanging out in winter, thanks to their ability to provide nuts and larger feeds.
Nuts- The right bird food will make the local population thrive in winter. Winter is a good time to have whole nuts or large amounts of them. They provide a reliable food source. Peanuts are great sources of fat, while black sunflower seeds have high oil content. Husked sunflower hearts can be a great choice if you don’t mind a little mess in the garden.
Fat balls – These are the perfect winter food choice. fat balls are a great source for high-quality food. They should last for a few days depending on how many birds are in your garden.
Even one of these simple things can help your birds survive the winter and thrive until the temperatures rise again. This will not only benefit local wildlife but it will also make your garden a more beautiful place to be.
