How to Trim Your Pet’s Nails
Pet owners often ask me how to trim their furry friends’ nails. It can be difficult for you and your pet to trim their nails. If not done properly, it can cause pain and bleeding.
Find the right tool for your job.
To simplify the nail trimming process, you need to find the right pair of clippers for your pet. A smaller pair of clippers is best for small dogs and cats. Medium and large dogs will need a heavier pair of clippers, easily cut through thicker nails.
Take your pet to the side.
Dogs and cats often dislike having their nails trimmed. This is especially true if they have had bad experiences with trimming nails in the past. It’s a good idea for your pet to be used to being held and have their feet touched from an early age. It is best to start when your pet is comfortable, such as when they are lying on your lap or cuddling. When they allow you to do this, make sure they are given lots of praises and encouragement!
Plan Your Attack
This is a great thing to have someone to assist you. Your helper can gently wrap your pet’s shoulders around their neck in a standing or sitting position. Gently lift the foot and carefully trim the nail. To avoid damaging the nail bed, trim the tip only. It would help if you did not cut too close to the nail bed as it can cause bleeding and pain. You are lucky if your pet has white nails! It should be possible to see the pink in the nail bed, making it easier to avoid.
If your pet is opposed to having their nails cut, you can start slowly by doing one nail or one foot at a time. You can reward your pet for good behaviour, and you will be able, with patience and time, to do more nails each session.
I cut it too short, and now it’s bleeding! Help!
Do not worry if the nail is accidentally too short. Even veterinarians, nurses, and groomers make mistakes from time to time. Sometimes the nail can seem very bleedy. Do not worry, as your pet’s blood will clot at its wound site, and the bleeding will stop. To aid this process, you can apply some pressure and tissue. Applying a small bandage to your carpet for about an hour if your pet can tolerate it, can save it!
A Note about Cats
While it is sometimes necessary to trim nails for feline friends, I advise against trimming nails outdoors. Outdoor cats depend on their nails to climb trees and fences to escape dangers (like unfriendly dogs). To keep their nails in shape, cats use trees and scratching posts to keep them clean. If your cat has excessively long nails, it may indicate arthritis or other conditions that prevent them from doing this.
It can seem not easy to trim your pet’s nails. But if you are patient and help your pet get used to it, it can be a great way to strengthen your relationship with your pet.
