Ivory coat dog food review

Ivory Coat had a loyal following when it was a small Australian business. However, the brand has suffered from several issues since being purchased by The Real Pet Food Co. and we strongly recommend against feeding Ivory Coat products to your pets.

We’ll be looking at the ingredients and guarantee analysis of Ivory Coat dog foods in an objective manner. However, please read the warning before you feed or consider purchasing Ivory Coat pet food products.

Ivory coat dog food review

The chicken meal is the first ingredient. It’s great to see. However, we can assume that the brown rice and oats are in similar amounts, more than the chicken 2:1. The peas and/or red lentils will likely be similar amounts. The chicken meal could be 25% or less of the entire product, which is pretty standard for pet food.

Oats and brown rice are great choices for grains, so I wouldn’t worry about them being in the dog’s food. Lentils and peas can be good for dogs if they are consumed in moderation. Consistent feeding the same food to our dogs is a problem. It’s worth looking at rotating the food with something different that isn’t made with grains or peas. Variety is good!

Although the rest of ingredients look good, there are a few ambiguities. Palatant could be any ingredient, which is why I am still amazed that labeling regulations allow for such terms. It could be either animal digest or tallow. This term has been criticized on social media and Internet forums. Natural antioxidant This is another ambiguous ingredient. The simple fact that they haven’t revealed the true ingredient would indicate it is not a quality addition. Vitamins & minerals This would be a “vitamin package” or premix. It is the cheapest way to get the “complete, balanced” checkbox. canola oil and/or salmon oil can be expected to lean more towards canola oil, as it is cheaper and therefore not the best inclusion.

Comparing the wheat free formulas to this one, we’ll see that it has slightly less protein, slightly more fat and around 10% more carbohydrates. This makes grain-free the better choice, but at a higher cost. The grain free formulas are still quite good, but it is more expensive.
